SO WHAT EXACTLY IS A WHITE ELEPHANT EVENING?
No doubt over the years you’ve all been given a present that you really didn’t like / need / want. It’s probably very nice – it just isn’t you. Well here’s your chance to exchange it for something else more to your liking and go home satisfied (though in truth we can’t really guarantee that). What we can guarantee, though, is that you’ll enjoy the funny side of the evening.
The only thing we insist upon is that the gift must be new and unused and it must have some value that someone else would appreciate. And at least one item per participant. If you bring two or three then you will go home with the same amount as you brought. The items must be wrapped in newspaper or whatever making them unidentifiable.
The actual rules of the game will be explained at the start of the evening.
A Small Step to the Moon but a Giant Leap in Undertsanding of the Jewish Calendar of its Day – A talk by Barbara Moont
The Earth goes around the sun every year and the moon goes around the earth every month. The Jewish calendar is based on both of these rotations. Around the year 350, Hillel HaNasi started the Jewish calendar of today. His accuracy was not equaled by the Western calendar for another 1000 years.
Barbara will explain the history of the Jewish calendar. She will also talk about the moon landings starting in 1969, when she worked on the Apollo project.
