A Small Step to the Moon but a Giant Leap in Undertsanding of the Jewish Calendar of its Day – A talk by Barbara Moont
The Earth goes around the sun every year and the moon goes around the earth every month. The Jewish calendar is based on both of these rotations. Around the year 350, Hillel HaNasi started the Jewish calendar of today. His accuracy was not equaled by the Western calendar for another 1000 years.
Barbara will explain the history of the Jewish calendar. She will also talk about the moon landings starting in 1969, when she worked on the Apollo project.
The history, conservation & digitization of the Dead Sea Scrolls, presented by Orit Rosengarten, Assistant to the Director of the Dead Sea Scrolls Project at the Israel Antiquities Authority.
This trip is in the planning stage. Please let Jackie know if you are interested.
We are hoping to have a half-day tiyul to the Yvel Jewellery Design Centre in Ramat Moza near Jerusalem. They specialise in jewellery made with pearls, emeralds, sapphires and naturallycoloured diamonds. Please let Jackie know if you are interested, this would not be a commitment.
First we will visit Tzipori. The sophisticated ancient northern city is the site of one of Israel’s most interesting archeological sites. It has wonderful mosaics that tell a story of life nearly 2,000 years ago.
The we shall visit the amazing Agamon Hula. You may have visited before but we are taking a special tour as the birds come home to roost. We will start with a tour around the lake in our bus and then board the ‘Safari Wagon’ for a very close encounter with the birds. This tour will be at dusk and they tell us it is just a splendid sight to see all the birds coming down for some rest and sleep.
